For millennia different cultures have searched for a panacea to enhance intimate relations, facilitate fertility and conception, or to stay in prime health during pregnancy and birth. Whether in the form of a ritual, scent, food, supplement or medicine – herbs, spices and extracts have always had a prominent place.
A vast range of ingredients have been labelled as aphrodisiacs, from Mannish water and oysters; to champagne, raw cacao and chocolate.
What distinguishes Nutraceuticals products from history’s purported ‘love potions’ is the science behind our ingredients. Key to our knowledge when we provide these materials is a spectrum of research and investigation. For example, Maca (Lepidium meyenii), which is known as the ‘Peruvian Viagra’ has been the subject of peer reviewed studies that have proven an increase in sexual desire.
Additionally, Tribulus Terrestris, was at the centre of two studies in Brazil. In 2010 a study by the Federal University of Paraná showed an increase in sperm production in rats. Further research demonstrated that it was not just the male population who had the potential to benefit from this South American native botanical. In a study at Sao Paulo State University, 88% of women taking Tribulus Terrestris reported an increase in sexual satisfaction.
On the other side of the equator, Traditional Chinese Medicine has a catalogue of successful usage of Red Ginseng (Panax ginseng) and Ginkgo Biloba to treat reproductive disorders, low mood and erectile dysfunction. Recent studies into the use of Panax ginseng – conducted in South Korea and published in the International Journal for Impotence Research – have demonstrated that it was ‘both efficacious and well-tolerated in men with mild-to-moderate erectile dysfunction’.
Ashwagandha Root (Withania somnifera) is another traditionally used botanical source which has demonstrated empirical results in robust academic studies. The University of California has looked into its use as a remedy for debility and stress, and to enhance cognitive function – and found that it could result in a decrease in sexual dysfunction.
Of course, there are many vitamins and minerals which also have a part to play in intimate relations. D-aspartic Acid (DAA), Zinc and Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) are recommended for increasing sperm production and the nutritional support provided by products such as Folic Acid and Methyltetrahydrofolate (MTHF) , have been shown to be beneficial for conception.
During pregnancy, health professionals widely recommend the inclusion of supplements for the health of the mother and developing infant. They can include Omega 3 for the child’s brain development, folic acid for the prevention of neural tube defects and, if the mother is deemed to be anaemic, Iron. Midwives may also encourage the mother to drink Raspberry Leaf tea during the final stages of pregnancy as it includes an alkaloid called Fragine, which is thought to help strengthen the uterine muscles and potentially make contractions more productive at the time of labour. Bromelain, an enzyme which is found in pineapple, also has also been shown to exert an effect on the ‘machinery’ of labour. Studies are underway to establish the means by which the fruit extract works but the suggestion is that Bromelain may help to soften and dilate the cervix.
Traditionally throughout the world, food and herbs have been used for the recovery from birth. Whole meals have been created around this unique time of life – whether a rich broth of lamb and Dong Quai (Angelica sinensis) to enrich blood and aid passing of the placenta; or indeed Avena sativa, in the form of a soft oat porridge or congee, to calm the stomach and ease it back into shape post-partum.
The foods and supplements which mothers are advised to take after birth, are largely aimed at promoting healing, recovery and breastfeeding. In the weeks immediately after the birth, a good Multivitamin can help to restore the body and compensate for gaps in the diet as a result of the hectic demands of new parenthood. Whilst breastfeeding, it is particularly important to maintain Calcium and Vitamin D levels. Deficiency in the sunshine vitamin, Vitamin D has been linked in several studies to perinatal depression – according to the MGH Center for Women’s Mental Health in the USA. Additionally, for babies who are only having breast milk (and no first infant formula top-ups), the NHS recommend they are also given a daily Vitamin D supplement to prevent the development of rickets and to assist in strong bone and teeth growth.
