This November, the Vegan Society is once again celebrating World Vegan Month – the global recognition of the Vegan movement and the benefits that a Vegan lifestyle can bring.

This year, however, there is even more cause for ceremony as the Society commemorates the 75th anniversary of its foundation. Nutraceuticals is proud of its association, as a registered product holder, with with the Society and want to join in the party spirit by praising the organisation’s ongoing ‘plant-fuelled’ campaign to create a kinder, healthier planet and advocate positive lifestyle choices.

The catch phrase of the event ,Vegan and Thriving, is most germane as The Vegan Society marks it’s significant milestone. The organisation was founded in the UK in 1944 in response to the need for Vegan options within WW2 rationing allowances. It’s more permanent aim was then “to seek an end to the use of animals by man for food, commodities, work, hunting, vivisection, and by all other uses involving exploitation of animal”. In spite of this admirable and worthwhile purpose, for much of its existence, the campaign that the Society championed and the lifestyle that it has promoted was seen by the majority of consumers as niche and even radical.

2019 – the year the world changes the way it eats.

2019 has, however, come to be regarded by many social commentators as the year the world changes the way that it eats. After more than a decade of groundswell towards more conscious consumption – which necessitates responsibility for the health of self, fellow beings and the planet – our plates have had a complete overhaul. This heightened awareness has created a sector of the Populus for whom the Vegan Society’s ethos has significant appeal and has lead to a growth in the organisation’s relevance and prevalence.

For the flourishing group of 21st century consumers who are motivated by issues of animal welfare, environmental concerns and personal health the current Vegan Society definition of what it means to live as a Vegan identifies and addresses their concerns.

A philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms, it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.”

The growth in the demand for Vegan alternatives, particularly in the food sector, over recent years has been rapid. Research commissioned by The Vegan Society in 2018 identified that the number of Vegans in the UK increased by 350 per cent in the previous decade. This trend is even more magnified on the other side of the Atlantic, with research firm GlobalData revealing that the period 2014 to 2017 saw a six-fold increase in the number of US Vegans.

The need for satisfying, tasty and healthful Vegan nutritional options, which this grassroots movement has generated, has led to rapid expansion of this sector of the food market.

From supermarkets to fast food outlets; fine dining to brewers – the big players are all racing to feed the growth of this trend. Even the most traditional providers are looking to adapt to stay relevant. Brewing institution, Guiness, recently ‘went Vegan’ by changing the recipe which had been used for over 250 years and removing the usage of fish bladders in their processing. Cheers!

Whilst the benefits of adopting a Vegan diet are now broadly acknowledged, it is not necessarily a fast track to healthy living and attention must be paid to ensure that all nutritional needs are met. Both the British Dietetic Association and the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recognise that a Vegan diet is suitable for every age and stage of life. Research conducted in Sweden in 2004 linked Vegan diets with improved heart health, including lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and lower rates of heart disease.

A survey conducted by the University of London, the University of Northampton and East Sussex NHS Healthcare Trust and reviewed in the BMJ journal Open Diabetes Research and Care claimed that a plant based diet had the potential to improve mental health, reduce diabetes and lower weight. The report identified that participants on plant-based diets were more likely to be able to cut down or stop taking diabetes drugs and lost nearly twice as much weight as others.

The British Dietetic Association agree that well-planned Vegan diets can be suitable for people of all ages, including during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

The Vegan Society promotes the idea that, ‘getting your nutrients from plant foods allows more room in your diet for health-promoting options like whole grains, fruits, nuts, seeds and vegetables, which are packed full of beneficial fibre, vitamins and minerals’. The organisation do recognise that managing a plant based diet to ensure that all of an individual’s nutritional needs are met can take some education and planning. On their website, they offer a range of dietary advice and guidance from leading Dietitians and a catalogue of inspiring recipes. Of particular benefit, is VNutrition, their dietary self-assessment app for Vegans which is available on your Android or Apple device.

The Vegan Society recommend taking a supplement – or including food which has been fortified with – Vitamins B12 and D

Even for the most balanced of Vegan diets, there are some nutrients that are difficult to obtain in sufficient quantities for optimum functioning. These are primarily Vitamin B12, Iodine, Vitamin D and long chain Omega-3 fats – but can also include Iron, Calcium and Zinc. To ensure that the body’s needs are met, The Vegan Society recommend taking a supplement or including food which has been fortified with Vitamins B12 and D. They also advise Vegans to consider a supplement containing long chain omega-3 fats from microalgae, particularly for infants and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Understandably, as consumers who have made considered and positive choices about what they put on their plate, Vegans require minerals and vitamins which have the same ethical standards applied. At Nutraceuticals, we are proud to be able to meet these important requirements with the products that we offer our customers. From Vegan proteins to plant sourced vitamins; and a huge range of herbal powders and extracts we have a solution for all dietary requirements. Earlier this year, we were pioneers in the UK ingredients market when we achieved registration with the Vegan Society of range of our Probiotic powders. Currently, approximately 95% of the products that we offer are from non-animal sources.

Plant-based Vitamin D3 is a supplement with considerable ethical and health advantages

With concerning recent reports about the use and exploitation of animals in the production of the supplements, it is not just those who have adopted a Vegan lifestyle who are looking for a plant-origin solution to fill the gaps in their diet. The benefits of omega 3s are well researched and whilst plants can provide the ALA – alpha-linolenic acid – they don’t contain long chain fatty acids – eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Including fish in your diet is one way to obtain these nutrients. However, fish over consumption is a huge environmental concern and the risks posed by contamination with heavy metals and other pollutants, make the option of a non-marine alternative very attractive. Nutraceuticals offer a selection of animal-free omega-3 products sourced from algae. As the algae used is specially cultivated to produce omega-3 supplements, the oceans and the organisms housed within are unharmed in its production. Plant-based Vitamin D3 is another supplement alternative with ethical and health advantages. Traditionally this vitamin has been sourced from sheep fleece. In addition to concerns about the treatment of the animal, there is now unease regarding pesticides (inc. sheep dip) that may contaminate lanolin-origin vitamin D3. Nutraceuticals Vegan Vitamin D3 is produced without the use of pesticides or harmful solvents.

The Vegetarian Resource Group identified that kitten fur (!!) and human hair are common sources of synthesis for amino acid supplements

From an animal welfare perspective, news regarding the production of some BCAAs (Branched Chain Amino Acids)causes even greater concern. The American Journal of Food Sciences identified in 2013 that in China the majority of BCAAs produced are derived from pig skin and hair and duck feathers. The Vegetarian Resource Group in the USA further suggested that kitten fur (!!) and human hair are common sources of synthesis for these products. Our Vegan fermented BCAAs are every bit as efficacious as the scary animal or human sourced versions – plus they have the distinct advantage of being more sustainable, are ‘cleaner’ in their production methods and come with peace of mind for all animal lovers!

This World Vegan Month why not engage with the growing movement of conscious consumers? If you haven’t already joined the party, consider celebrating 75th Birthday of the Vegan Society with a complete lifestyle change, or by choosing the animal free option next time you decide on a takeaway – or even by ‘going Vegan’ with the supplements and ingredients that you select.

If you would like to buy products that are as healthy for our animal pals are they are for you, we would be pleased to explain our range of Vegan Registered and plant-based products with you.
